MILO AND SIG HOBBLED BACK to the warehouse together. Sig didn’t speak. He’d been curled up and shivering at the top of the rise. Barely conscious. Milo’d had to shake him awake.

Jules was waiting. He asked where Dagda was, and Milo said, “She’s fine. But we’re not done yet.”

He told Jules to take Sig. To get him to the Haunts, then to get everyone back home again. “Home,” he said. “Behind locked doors. Safe. You hear me, Jules? Dagda and I will be right behind you. You’re in charge.”

He left again without waiting for Jules’s answer, limping back in the thunder and the lightning and the pounding rain. He still had Joff’s stick, and he held tight to it the whole way back. A part of him hoped he would run across more guards. That there would be something else for him to hit.

It wasn’t the best or smartest part of him, but it was a part.
